City of Stairs

Day: 10

Today is my first proper day in Paris. The deliciousness that awaits includes an Open Bus Tour of the City, the Arc de Triomphe, Trocadero and....the Eiffel Tower!!!!

The lovely Clodie has joined me on my explorations of the city of Paris.

First an Open Bus Tour of (a part of)Paris. Even though the sun is out it is FREEZING!!! This is the coldest I have been on my trip so far. Sitting out in the open with air rushing past is not helping of course. From the bus we see such Paris landmarks as the Arc de Triomphe, the Musee Lourve, Notre Dame, The Obelisk (of Paris) and there in the distance...the Eiffel Tower.

See over there....in the distance....

I am about to seek salvation in the enclosed part of the bus (downstairs, therefore not getting as good a view) but we have reached our first stop the Arc de Triomphe!

After a cruise down the Champs-Élysées we see this infamous arch. Originally commissioned by Napolean as a monument of his successful battles it is now a war memorial which includes the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Clodie and I climbed all the way to the top and it is here that I rename Paris, from the 'City of Love' to the 'City of Stairs'. There are 284 steps to the top of the arch and most of those are in a tight, dizzying spiral. the view from the top of it though is awesome. The Arc de Triomphe stands in the middle of what some claim is the worlds busiest roundabout, with 12 roads leading onto it!! Glad to not be driving in Paris!!

The stairs!!!
